Jumping spiders are highly sensitive to chemicals and strong smells. To ensure their well-being, it's very important to minimize the use of cleaners, perfumes, and other fragranced products in their vicinity.
Why avoid certain products?
- Toxic Chemicals: Many household cleaning products and air fresheners contain harmful chemicals that can cause neurological damage to spiders, potentially leading to a fatal condition known as Dyskinetic Syndrome (DKS).
- Strong Scents: Spiders, including jumping spiders, utilize chemical cues and vibrations to navigate their surroundings. Strong scents from perfumes or fragranced products can disrupt their sensory organs and potentially overwhelm their respiratory systems, which are located externally on their bodies.
- Residue: Scented items like candles, diffusers, and wax melts release residues into the air that can deposit on surfaces and potentially harm spiders upon contact.
Regal jumping spiders (Phidippus regius) can make surprisingly great little pets, especially for people interested in unique, low-maintenance animals. Here are some benefits of keeping one:
Low Maintenance
- They don’t require a lot of space—small terrariums work fine.
- Feeding is straightforward: they eat live insects like fruit flies or small crickets.
- No need for heating or UV lights in most environments.
Fascinating Behavior
- They’re active and curious, often watching you with their big, forward-facing eyes.
- They can be quite interactive, sometimes even recognizing their owner’s presence over time.
Clean and Odorless
- They don’t smell or create messes
- Their enclosures are easy to keep clean—just remove old food and waste periodically.
Great for Learning
- Observing them is educational, especially for those into biology, entomology, or animal behavior.
- They’re often used in schools or STEM education settings.
